Good Habits: Change Your Life for the Better One Day at a Time

Good HabitsBy Kate McVeigh

Wherever you are in life right now, your habits brought you to that place, whether good or bad. And with God’s help and love, your life can change for the better starting now—by changing your habits. You do that one day at a time, little by little.

Did you know that what you do daily determines what you become permanently? Your daily habits are creating your future. You are a result today of yesterday’s habits, good or bad. This is true in every area of life. For example, your physical health and the condition and shape of your body are the direct result of yesterday’s eating habits—and last year’s, and the last 10 years’! The you that you have created is a result of your eating habits, exercise habits, and nutrition habits (or lack thereof!)

The same thing is true concerning your finances. Whatever financial situation you may find yourself in at this moment is probably a direct result of your past financial habits. Your giving, saving, and spending habits have created your present financial state.

The same is true spiritually speaking. The spiritual condition you are in now is a direct result of your habits. Your Bible reading, church attendance, and prayer habits have created the spiritual condition you are in right now.

But the good news is, you can change your habits! The good habits you begin to form today can change your life for the better in every one of these areas. You decide your daily habits, and your daily habits determine what your future will be. The secret to your future success is hidden in your day-to-day routine. In other words, what you do day-in and day-out determines what you become.

We often think negatively when we hear the word habit, but some habits can be good. As you study the lives of successful people, you will see a thread of consistency that weaves through their lives—good habits they practiced that caused them to succeed. People who have a habit of being diligent, whether at work, at home, or in their own business, end up prospering in what they do.

PROVERBS 10:4

4  He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

Proverbs 12:24

24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.

Proverbs 22:29

29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean [ordinary] men.

Some people stand back and look with envy at the success of their peers, saying things such as, “I’d love to have a successful business like theirs.” Or they wonder, Why is that church [or ministry] so successful? There are usually reasons. Often we want the success of others, but we don’t want to pay the price they paid to get there. We know that success for the Christian involves following God’s plan for our lives and totally obeying His Word (Isa. 1:19).

The principle of godly habits producing welcome results has been called many things. “Seedtime and harvest,” “reaping what you sow,” and “what goes around, comes around” are just a few of the terms and phrases people often use.

The bottom line is this: Discipline yourself to do the right thing long enough, and eventually the right thing will happen to you. Often people get tired of doing the right thing, and they give up. The Bible says that you will reap if you faint not (Gal. 6:9).
